Well my first birthday in Bangladesh was a pretty laid back affair. With Friday (my birthday) falling on the weekend, I took my team out to lunch on Thursday to the icddr,b Guest House where we had some great food from a local restuarant and take-away called Dhaba, which is famous for its Kebabs. It was a nice day, but as with all things Muslim, there was not too much exuberance, and certainly no getting drunk because the strongest thing on offer was a Pepsi or Sprite. The guys got me a cake and a nice shirt (everyone gets the same), and as usual laughed at my jokes most of which they cannot understand (they really struggle to understand Aussie humour). The following day (my actual birthday) I had dinner at the British High Commission with some friends from work, where there was alcohol, good food and great conversion (in English). It is such a welcome relief from Bangla and badly spoken English. My real celebration however, comes this weekend, when I travel to Chiang Mai in Thailand for 5 days. It will be so good to escape from Dhake for a little while.
